So, last night, after a relatively difficult day in Presby-land, my partner and I were in the car, listening to a mixed cd which has been on repeat since I made it a couple of weeks ago. Somewhat joking, I switched to the fourth track on the mix, Pat Benetar’s “We Belong” (which is so much better in video form that I’ve included it):
I jokingly said to my partner, “This is my song for the church right now.” As we got into the first stanza, though, I laughed at myself, realizing that, in some ways, it says exactly how I feel right now. So, we sang loudly, we laughed, and we remembered that Pat Benetar made some really great songs in the 80s. We were also reminded that a big part of why we do what we do is because we are inextricably tied to the church, which is so much bigger than us, or than this time and place; and, we remembered that it is worth fighting for.
